Fort McDowell Arizona is located in the lush Sonoran Desert surrounded by gorgeous mountain views and bisected by the south flowing Verde River. Fountain Hills is to the southwest, the McDowell Mountain Regional Park is to the northwest, Rio Verde is located directly north, the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community is to the south, and the Tonto National Forest and Goldfield Ranch are to the east.
The Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation has approximately 900 members and has several enterprises, such as the Fort McDowell Casino, We-Ko-Pa Golf Course, Fort McDowell Adventures, the Radisson Resort and Conference Center, an RV Resort, a gas station, the tribal farm, and a quarry.
Neighboring Goldfield Ranch is a small community made up of approximately 90 horse properties.
The Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation hosts several events throughout the year. One of the most historically significant celebrations is the Orme Dam Victory Days in November, when the defeat of the construction of the Orme Dam is commemorated; had the dam been built, the reservation would have been flooded. Some of the other annual events hosted by Fort McDowell are the Silver Car Auction in January, the River of Time Casino Day and the UFO Show in February, the Native American Fine Arts Show in March, the July 4th fireworks & concert and the Lori Piestewa National Native American Games in July, and the Fiesta Bowl Parade held in Phoenix.
